@incollection{fdi:010006339, title = {{R}eflection of low frequency {E}quatorial waves on partial boundaries}, author = {{P}enhoat, {Y}ves du and {C}ane, {M}.{A}. and {P}atton, {R}.{J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e develop a linear theory for the effects of partial boundaries on low frequency waves of the kind thought to be important in the seasonal and interannual variations of the equatorial circulation. {T}he {W}estern partial boundary case (e.g. {B}razil) differs from the {E}astern one (e.g. the {G}ulf of {G}uinea) by the presence of short {R}ossby waves trapped along the {N}orth-{S}outh part of the boundary which form a boundary current accomplishing the required meridional redistribution of the zonal mass flux. {T}here is a discontinuity in the dynamic topography at the corner of the {E}ast-{W}est current at this point. {C}alculations for the world's equatorial ocean basin shapes are discussed. {C}alculations carried out for equatorial islands show that propagation of such low frequency waves will not be affected significantly by any island of the real equatorial ocean.
