@article{fdi:010006321, title = {{H}indcasts of {E}quatorial sea surface dynamic height in the {A}tlantic in 1982-1984}, author = {{P}enhoat, {Y}ves du and {G}ouriou, {Y}ves}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}wo different wind data sets of the years 1982-1984 are used to force in linear multimode model of the {T}ropical {A}tlantic ocean. {W}e describe the variations of the {E}quatorial slope in both cases and investigate the differences betwenthe two runs. {T}he main discrepancy occurs in 1983 for the amplitude of the seasonal signal all along the equator. {M}odels results are also compared with observations (hydrocasts and inverted echo sounders) taken during the {P}rogramme {F}ran{\c{c}}ais {O}c{\'e}an et {C}limat dans l'{A}tlantique {E}quatorial/{S}easonal {R}esponse of the {E}quatorial {A}tlantic ({FOCAL}/{SEQUAL}) field experiment (july 1982 throught october 1984). {T}he contrast between 1983 and 1984 is well captured by the two runs, especially the abnormal flat topography of the sea surface along the equator in the first 3 months of 1984 due to an unusual basin wide relaxation of the {E}quatorial wind stress. {T}he major discrepancy between model results and observations is found during the upwelling periods east of 10°{W}, but at that time dynamic height measurements are too sparse to give a good description of these events.
