@article{PAR00014995, title = {{B}ackground review for diagnostic test development for {Z}ika virus infection}, author = {{C}harrel, {R}. {N}. and {L}eparc-{G}offart, {I}. and {P}as, {S}. and de {L}amballerie, {X}avier and {K}oopmans, {M}. and {R}eusken, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjective {T}o review the state of knowledge about diagnostic testing for {Z}ika virus infection and identify areas of research needed to. address the current gaps in knowledge. {M}ethods {W}e made a non-systematic review of the published literkure about {Z}ika virus and supplemented this with information from commercial diagnostic test kits and personal communications with researchers in {E}uropean preparedness networks. {T}he review covered current knowledge about the geographical spread, pathogen characteristics, life cycle and infection kinetics of the virus. {T}he available molecular and serological tests and biosafety issues are described and discussed in the context of the current outbreak strain. {F}indings {W}e identified the following areas of research to address current knowledge gaps: (i) an urgent assessment of the laboratory capacity and capability of countries to detect {Z}ika virus; (ii) rapid and extensive field validation of the available molecular and serological tests in areas with and without {Z}ika virus transmission, with a focus on pregnant women; (iii) monitoring the genomic diversity of circulating {Z}ika virus strains; (iv) prospective studies into the virus infection kinetics, focusing on diagnostic sampling (specimen types, combinations and timings); and (v) developing external quality assessments for molecular and serological. testing, including differential diagnosis for similar viruses and symptom clusters. {T}he availability of reagents for diagnostic development (virus strains and antigens, quantified viral ribonucleic acid) needs to be facilitated. {C}onclusion {A}n international laboratory response is needed, including preparation of protocols for prospective studies to address the most pressing information needs.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}ulletin of the {W}orld {H}ealth {O}rganization}, volume = {94}, numero = {8}, pages = {574--584}, ISSN = {0042-9686}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.2471/blt.16.171207}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00014995}, }
