@article{PAR00014887, title = {{I}mportance of mosquito "quasispecies" in selecting an epidemic arthropod-borne virus}, author = {{V}azeille, {M}. and {Z}ouache, {K}. and {V}ega-{R}ua, {A}. and {T}hiberge, {J}. {M}. and {C}aro, {V}. and {Y}ebakima, {A}. and {M}ousson, {L}. and {P}iorkowski, {G}. and {D}auga, {C}. and {V}aney, {M}. {C}. and {M}anni, {M}. and {G}asperi, {G}. and de {L}amballerie, {X}avier and {F}ailloux, {A}. {B}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ost arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), perpetuated by alternation between a vertebrate host and an insect vector, are likely to emerge through minor genetic changes enabling the virus to adapt to new hosts. {I}n the past decade, chikungunya virus ({CHIKV}; {A}lphavirus, {T}ogaviridae) has emerged on {L}a {R}eunion {I}sland following the selection of a unique substitution in the {CHIKV} {E}1 envelope glycoprotein ({E}1-{A}226{V}) of an {E}ast-{C}entral-{S}outh {A}frican ({ECSA}) genotype conferring a higher transmission rate by the mosquito {A}edes albopictus. {A}ssumed to have occurred independently on at least four separate occasions, this evolutionary convergence was suspected to be responsible for {CHIKV} worldwide expansion. {H}owever, assumptions on {CHIKV} emergence were mainly based on viral genetic changes and the role of the mosquito population quasispecies remained unexplored. {H}ere we show that the nature of the vector population is pivotal in selecting the epidemic {CHIKV}. {W}e demonstrate using microsatellites mosquito genotyping that {A}e. albopictus populations are genetically differentiated, contributing to explain their differential ability to select the {E}1-226{V} mutation. {A}edes albopictus, newly introduced in {C}ongo coinciding with the first {CHIKV} outbreak, was not able to select the substitution {E}1-{A}226{V} nor to preferentially transmit a {CHIKV} clone harboring the {E}1-226{V} as did {A}e. albopictus from {L}a {R}eunion.}, keywords = {{CONGO} ; {CENTRAFRIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {6}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 29564}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1038/srep29564}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00014887}, }
