@article{PAR00013727, title = {{SARAL}/{A}lti{K}a wet tropospheric correction : in-flight calibration, retrieval strategies and performances}, author = {{P}icard, {B}. and {F}rery, {M}. {L}. and {O}bligis, {E}. and {E}ymard, {L}aurence and {S}teunou, {N}. and {P}icot, {N}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {SARAL}/{A}lti{K}a mission is a complement of the {J}ason altimeter series. {A} twochannels ( 23.8 {GH}z and 37 {GH}z) microwave radiometer ( {MWR}) is combined to the altimeter in order to correct the altimeter range for the excess path delay ( referred as {WTC} for wet tropospheric correction. {F}irst, the in- flight calibration of {A}lti{K}a {MWR} is assessed from a systematic comparison to other radiometers using a complete set of metrics ( comparison to simulations and over geophysical targets). {T}hen the "mixed" empirical approach successfully used for {E}nvisat shows nonoptimal performances for the {WTC} retrieval. {I}n order to find the potential sources of issues, this method is compared to a purely empirical relationship established between measured brightness temperatures ( {TB}) and altimeter backscattering coefficient ( sigma 0) on one hand and modeled {WTC} on the other hand. {V}arious retrieval configurations for both {A}lti{K}a {MWR} and advanced microwave radiometer ( {AMR}) on {J}ason-2, are for the first time systematically compared with respect to their performances against the variance of sea surface height differences at crossovers. {F}inally, the issues on the "mixed" approach are attributed to the differences between simulated and measured s0 at {K}a-band. {N}ow, a configuration of the empirical approach proved to have performances closed to what is initially expected with the "mixed" approach.}, keywords = {{A}ltimetry ; data quality ; microwave radiometry ; wet tropospheric ; correction}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {G}eodesy}, volume = {38}, numero = {1}, pages = {277--296}, ISSN = {0149-0419}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.1080/01490419.2015.1040903}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00013727}, }
