@article{PAR00013201, title = {{M}olecular detection of fastidious and common bacteria as well as {P}lasmodium spp. in febrile and afebrile children in {F}ranceville, {G}abon}, author = {{M}ourembou, {G}. and {F}enollar, {F}. and {S}ocolovschi, {C}. and {L}emamy, {G}. {J}. and {N}zoughe, {H}. and {K}ouna, {L}. {C}. and {T}oure-{N}douo, {F}. and {M}illion, {M}. and {M}biguino, {A}. {N}. and {L}ekana-{D}ouki, {J}. {B}. and {R}aoult, {D}idier}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}alaria was considered as the main cause of fever in {A}frica. {H}owever, with the roll back malaria initiative, the causes of fever in {A}frica may change. {T}his study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of bacteria and {P}lasmodium spp. in febrile and afebrile (controls) children from {F}ranceville, {G}abon. {A}bout 793 blood samples from febrile children and 100 from controls were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction ({PCR}) coupled with sequencing. {P}lasmodium spp. was the microorganism most detected in febrile (74.5%, 591/793) and controls (13%, 13/100), {P} < 0.0001. {I}ts coinfection with bacteria was found only in febrile children ({P} = 0.0001). {S}taphylococcus aureus was the most prevalent bacterium in febrile children (2.8%, 22/793) and controls (3%, 3/100). {E}ight cases of {S}almonella spp. (including two {S}almonella enterica serovar {P}aratyphi) and two of {S}treptococcus pneumoniae were found only among febrile children. {B}orrelia spp. was found in 2 controls while {R}ickettsia felis was detected in 10 children (in 8 febriles and 2 afebriles). {N}o {DNA} of other targeted microorganisms was detected. {P}lasmodium spp. remains prevalent while {S}almonella spp., {S}taphylococcus aureus, and {S}treptococcus pneumoniae were common bacteria in {G}abon. {T}wo fastidious bacteria, {R}ickettsia felis and {B}orrelia spp., were found. {I}nclusion of controls should improve the understanding of the causes of fever in sub-{S}aharan {A}frica.}, keywords = {{GABON} ; {FRANCEVILLE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {92}, numero = {5}, pages = {926--932}, ISSN = {0002-9637}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.4269/ajtmh.14-0699}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00013201}, }
