@article{PAR00013061, title = {{P}rospective comparison of infective endocarditis in {K}hon {K}aen, {T}hailand and {R}ennes, {F}rance}, author = {{W}att, {G}. and {L}acroix, {A}. and {P}achirat, {O}. and {B}aggett, {H}. {C}. and {R}aoult, {D}idier and {F}ournier, {P}. {E}. and {T}attevin, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}rospectively collected, contemporary data are lacking on how the features of infective endocarditis ({IE}) vary according to region. {W}e, therefore, compared {IE} in {R}ennes, {F}rance and {K}hon {K}aen, {T}hailand. {F}ifty-eight patients with confirmed {IE} were enrolled at each site during 2011 and 2012 using a common protocol. {C}ompared with {F}rench patients, {T}hais had a lower median age (47 versus 70 years old; {P} < 0.001) and reported more animal contact (86% versus 21%; {P} < 0.001). {T}here were more zoonotic infections among {T}hai than {F}rance patients (6 and 1 cases; {P} = 0.017) and fewer staphylococcal infections (4 versus 15 cases; {P} = 0.011). {U}nderlying rheumatic heart disease was more prevalent in {T}hai than in {F}rench patients (31% and 4%; {P} = 0.001), whereas prosthetic heart valves were less prevalent (9% and 35%; {P} = 0.001). {O}ur data strengthen previous observations that {IE} in the tropics has distinctive demographic characteristics, risk factors, and etiologies and underscore the need for improved prevention and control strategies.}, keywords = {{THAILANDE} ; {FRANCE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {92}, numero = {4}, pages = {871--874}, ISSN = {0002-9637}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.4269/ajtmh.14-0689}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00013061}, }
