@article{PAR00012385, title = {{O}ccurrence of {T}ropheryma whipplei during diarrhea in {H}ajj pilgrims : a {PCR} analysis of paired rectal swabs}, author = {{G}autret, {P}. and {B}enkouiten, {S}. and {P}arola, {P}. and {B}rouqui, {P}. and {M}emish, {Z}. and {R}aoult, {D}idier}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}ropheryma whipplei was recently associated with gastroenteritis in children. {W}e hypothesize that {T}. whipplei may be a contributing microbe in traveller's diarrhea. {M}ethod: {T}he presence of {T}. whipplei was investigated by {PCR} on rectal swab samples of {H}ajj pilgrims before and after travelling to the {K}ingdom of {S}audi {A}rabia ({KSA}). {A}dditionally a rectal swab was performed at the time of diarrhea for some pilgrims. {R}esults: {A} total of 129 pilgrims underwent rectal swab samples before departure and on return. {A}ll pilgrims were negative for {T}. whipplei before travel. {O}ne pilgrim (0.8%) was positive on return but did not reported diarrhea. {A} total of 30 pilgrims (23.3%) experienced diarrhea during the stay in the {KSA}. {N}ine pilgrims with diarrhea underwent the additional rectal swab during their diarrhea episode, two of them were positive for {T}. whipplei. {C}onclusions: {T}his work suggests that {T}. whipplei may be associated with adult traveller's diarrhea, by finding {T}. whipplei {DNA} individuals negative before and after the episode of diarrhea. {F}urther study addressing this issue in larger cohorts of {H}ajj pilgrims with systematic sampling at the time of diarrheal episode may help to understand the potential role of {T}. whipplei in traveller's diarrhea.}, keywords = {{D}iarrhea ; {T}raveller ; {H}ajj ; {T}ropheryma whipplei ; {ARABIE} {SAOUDITE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ravel {M}edicine and {I}nfectious {D}isease}, volume = {12}, numero = {5}, pages = {481--484}, ISSN = {1477-8939}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1016/j.tmaid.2014.04.003}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00012385}, }
