@article{PAR00012134, title = {{C}limate and atmosphere simulator for experiments on ecological systems in changing environments}, author = {{V}erdier, {B}. and {J}ouanneau, {I}. and {S}imonnet, {B}. and {R}abin, {C}. and {V}an {D}ooren, {T}. {J}. {M}. and {D}elpierre, {N}. and {C}lobert, {J}. and {A}bbadie, {L}uc and {F}erriere, {R}. and {L}e {G}alliard, {J}. {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{G}rand challenges in global change research and environmental science raise the need for replicated experiments on ecosystems subjected to controlled changes in multiple environmental factors. {W}e designed and developed the {E}colab as a variable climate and atmosphere simulator for multifactor experimentation on natural or artificial ecosystems. {T}he {E}colab integrates atmosphere conditioning technology optimized for accuracy and reliability. {T}he centerpiece is a highly contained, 13-m(3) chamber to host communities of aquatic and terrestrial species and control climate (temperature, humidity, rainfall, irradiance) and atmosphere conditions ({O}-2 and {CO}2 concentrations). {T}emperature in the atmosphere and in the water or soil column can be controlled independently of each other. {A}ll climatic and atmospheric variables can be programmed to follow dynamical trajectories and simulate gradual as well as step changes. {W}e demonstrate the {E}colab's capacity to simulate a broad range of atmospheric and climatic conditions, their diurnal and seasonal variations, and to support the growth of a model terrestrial plant in two contrasting climate scenarios. {T}he adaptability of the {E}colab design makes it possible to study interactions between variable climate atmosphere factors and biotic disturbances. {D}eveloped as an open-access, multichamber platform, this equipment is available to the international scientific community for exploring interactions and feedbacks between ecological and climate systems.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {S}cience and {T}echnology}, volume = {48}, numero = {15}, pages = {8744--8753}, ISSN = {0013-936{X}}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1021/es405467s}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00012134}, }
