@article{PAR00011799, title = {{S}amba virus : a novel mimivirus from a giant rain forest, the {B}razilian {A}mazon}, author = {{C}ampos, {R}. {K}. and {B}oratto, {P}. {V}. and {A}ssis, {F}. {L}. and {A}guiar, {E}rgr and {S}ilva, {L}. {C}. {F}. and {A}lbarnaz, {J}. {D}. and {D}ornas, {F}. {P}. and {T}rindade, {G}. {S}. and {F}erreira, {P}. {P}. and {M}arques, {J}. {T}. and {R}obert, {C}. and {R}aoult, {D}idier and {K}roon, {E}. {G}. and {L}a {S}cola, {B}. and {A}brahao, {J}. {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}he identification of novel giant viruses from the nucleocytoplasmic large {DNA} viruses group and their virophages has increased in the last decade and has helped to shed light on viral evolution. {T}his study describe the discovery, isolation and characterization of {S}amba virus ({SMBV}), a novel giant virus belonging to the {M}imivirus genus, which was isolated from the {N}egro {R}iver in the {B}razilian {A}mazon. {W}e also report the isolation of an {SMBV}-associated virophage named {R}io {N}egro ({RNV}), which is the first {M}imivirus virophage to be isolated in the {A}mericas. {M}ethods/results: {B}ased on a phylogenetic analysis, {SMBV} belongs to group {A} of the putative {M}egavirales order, possibly a new virus related to {A}canthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus ({APMV}). {SMBV} is the largest virus isolated in {B}razil, with an average particle diameter about 574 nm. {T}he {SMBV} genome contains 938 {ORF}s, of which nine are {ORF}ans. {T}he 1,213.6 kb {SMBV} genome is one of the largest genome of any group {A} {M}imivirus described to date. {E}lectron microscopy showed {RNV} particle accumulation near {SMBV} and {APMV} factories resulting in the production of defective {SMBV} and {APMV} particles and decreasing the infectivity of these two viruses by several logs. {C}onclusion: {T}his discovery expands our knowledge of {M}imiviridae evolution and ecology.}, keywords = {{M}imiviridae ; {DNA} virus ; {G}iant virus ; {NCLDV} ; {V}irophage ; {A}mazon ; {B}razil ; {AMAZONIE} ; {BRESIL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{V}irology {J}ournal}, volume = {11}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 95}, ISSN = {1743-422{X}}, year = {2014}, DOI = {10.1186/1743-422x-11-95}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00011799}, }
