  abstract = {{T}hree different lineages of head lice are known to parasitize humans. {C}lade {A}, which is currently worldwide in distribution, was previously demonstrated to be present in the {A}mericas before the time of {C}olumbus. {T}he two other types of head lice are geographically restricted to {A}merica and {A}ustralia for clade {B} and to {A}frica and {A}sia for clade {C}. {I}n this study, we tested two operculated nits from a 4,000-year-old {C}hilean mummy of {C}amarones for the presence of the partial {C}ytb mitochondrial gene (270 bp). {O}ur finding shows that clade {B} head lice were present in {A}merica before the arrival of the {E}uropean colonists.},
