@article{PAR00010420, title = {{S}erologic prevalence of {A}moeba-associated microorganisms in intensive care unit pneumonia patients}, author = {{B}ousbia, {S}. and {P}apazian, {L}. and {S}aux, {P}. and {F}orel, {J}. {M}. and {A}uffray, {J}. {P}. and {M}artin, {C}. and {R}aoult, {D}idier and {L}a {S}cola, {B}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {P}atients admitted to intensive care units are frequently exposed to pathogenic microorganisms present in their environment. {E}xposure to these microbes may lead to the development of hospital-acquired infections that complicate the illness and may be fatal. {A}moeba-associated microorganisms ({AAM}s) are frequently isolated from hospital water networks and are reported to be associated to cases of community and hospital-acquired pneumonia. {M}ethodology/{P}rincipal {F}indings: {W}e used a multiplexed immunofluorescence assay to test for the presence of antibodies against {AAM}s in sera of intensive care unit ({ICU}) pneumonia patients and compared to patients at the admission to the {ICU} (controls). {O}ur results show that some {AAM}s may be more frequently detected in patients who had hospital-acquired pneumonia than in controls, whereas other {AAM}s are ubiquitously detected. {H}owever, {ICU} patients seem to exhibit increasing immune response to {AAM}s when the {ICU} stay is prolonged. {M}oreover, concomitant antibodies responses against seven different microorganisms (5 {R}hizobiales, {B}alneatrix alpica, and {M}imivirus) were observed in the serum of patients that had a prolonged {ICU} stay. {C}onclusions/{S}ignificance: {O}ur work partially confirms the results of previous studies, which show that {ICU} patients would be exposed to water amoeba-associated microorganisms, and provides information about the magnitude of {AAM} infection in {ICU} patients, especially patients that have a prolonged {ICU} stay. {H}owever, the incidence of this exposure on the development of pneumonia remains to assess.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}los {O}ne}, volume = {8}, numero = {3}, pages = {e58111}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2013}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0058111}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00010420}, }
