  abstract = {{W}hen amoebae are simultaneously infected with {A}canthamoeba polyphaga {M}imivirus ({APM}) and the strictly intracellular {BABL}1 bacterium, the latter is always lost after serial subculturing. {W}e showed that the virophage {S}putnik 1, by reducing {APM} fitness, preserved {BABL}1 growth in acute and chronic models. {T}his capability of a virophage to modulate the virulence of mimiviruses highlights the competition that occurs between them during natural host infection.},
