@article{PAR00009895, title = {{O}n associations between the 11-year solar cycle and the {I}ndian {S}ummer {M}onsoon system}, author = {{C}laud, {C}. and {D}uchiron, {B}. and {T}erray, {P}ascal}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n this observational study, the associations between the characteristics of the {I}ndian {S}ummer {M}onsoon ( {ISM}) and the 11-year solar cycle have been investigated using a statistical analysis. {A} rather complex picture, with considerable spatial variation, has been observed. {T}he most striking features appear in {A}ugust and to some extent in {J}uly, where for higher solar activity, precipitation is reduced over the equatorial {I}ndian {O}cean and increased over the western {P}acific {O}cean and to a lesser extent over part of the {I}ndian subcontinent. {I}n terms of mechanisms, it is suggested that these associations result from a combination of effects: on one side, an effect which maximizes in {J}uly-{A}ugust with warmer temperatures in the lower stratosphere for maximum solar activity, and is consistent with a reduction of the convective activity in the equatorial region and an enhancement in off-equatorial regions; on the other side, a modulation of the mean sea level pressure fields, with a more southerly position of the monsoon trough in {J}une, and a northwestward shift of the {M}ascarene {H}igh in {J}uly-{A}ugust consistent with a stronger monsoon circulation. {H}igh solar activity could also cool the {F}ebruary-{M}arch {SST} in the southern {I}ndian {O}cean, which weakens the subsequent monsoon. {O}bservations over the period 1871-2001 confirm these associations. {A}s a result of the reported mechanisms, the 11-year solar cycle has poor skill for foreshadowing the {ISM} as a whole. {H}owever, the associations, occurring on the timescale of months, provide a new insight and would be of considerable interest for further modeling studies.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch-{A}tmospheres}, volume = {113}, numero = {{D}9}, pages = {{D}09105}, ISSN = {0148-0227}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1029/2007jd008996}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00009895}, }
