@article{PAR00000224, title = {{I}mpact of barrier layer on winter-spring variability of the southeastern {A}rabian {S}ea - art. no. {L}07703}, author = {{M}asson, {S}. and {L}uo, {J}. {J}. and {M}adec, {G}. and {V}ialard, {J}. and {D}urand, {F}. and {G}ualdi, {S}. and {G}uilyardi, {E}. and {B}ehera, {S}. and {D}elecluse, {P}. and {N}avarra, {A}. and {Y}amagata, {T}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n the present study, we use a coupled model to evaluate the effect of shallow salinity stratification on the sea surface temperature ({SST}) and on the monsoon onset in the southeastern {A}rabian {S}ea ({SEAS}). {A} 100-year control experiment shows that the coupled model reproduces the main climatic features in this region in terms of {SST}, precipitation and barrier layer ({BL}). {A} 100-year sensitivity experiment (where {BL} effects have been suppressed in the {SEAS}) shows that {BL} enhances the spring {SST} warming by 0.5 degrees {C}, and leads to a statistically significant increase of precipitation in {M}ay (3 mm/day) linked to an early (10 to 15 days) monsoon onset. {T}his suggests that the {BL} extent may be a useful predictor of the summer monsoon onset in the area with a two-month lead-time. {H}owever the effect above is mostly concentrated in the {SEAS}, and there is no significant impact over continental {I}ndia.}, keywords = {{INDE} ; {MER} {D}'{ARABIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eophysical {R}esearch {L}etters}, volume = {32}, numero = {7}, pages = {{NIL}_15--{NIL}_18}, ISSN = {0094-8276}, year = {2005}, DOI = {10.1029/2004{GL}021980}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/{PAR}00000224}, }
